Mentoring for Effective Teaching (MET) program
Supporting early-career teachers (i.e., preservice teachers and beginning teachers) is crucial to the development of an education system. The Mentoring for Effective Teaching (MET) program offers world-class professional learning for teachers wanting to become mentors for early-career teachers.
For more than six years, the two-day MET program has been delivered to over 30 Australian institutes with more than 1200 MET facilitators trained. In addition, MET has been refined and delivered internationally to universities in other countries such as the US, China, Italy, and the Philippines.
Importantly, all teachers who want to mentor early-career teachers need to have access to the latest information about effective mentoring practices.
As a key component of a significant project, the MET program received a Commonwealth citation award in 2012 and a coveted national program award in 2013. MET is based on a five factor model that emanated from research studies on mentoring in teacher education. A major emphasis of the MET program is on the core business of teaching, especially focusing on school students and differentiated learning.
MET aims to make a difference to early-career teachers’ practices by ensuring mentors have researched-based knowledge and skills for supporting and guiding their mentees.
